1. Spend the day in Ponta Delgada

The charming capital city of Ponta Delgada, is a must-visit, if you're staying elsewhere on the island.  Through out the town you will find beautiful black and white cobbled streets, historic churches, and lively harbor. Take a stroll along the waterfront promenade and enjoy the views of the Atlantic Ocean.












2. Four Wheeling Sete Cidades.

One of my favorite tours I did, was a small group four wheeling adventure to Sete Cidades. It allows you to explore the western part of the island, including the rim of the crater, on an exciting off-road adventure. The tour will also take you beyond the lakes, to the nearby coastal towns.













3. Hiking or Canyoning Ribeira dos Caldeirões.

This natural park is located on the northern coast of São Miguel. It's a protected area known for its waterfalls, lush vegetation, and scenic walking trails. If you're looking for an adrenaline rush,  consider a Canyoning experience in Ribeira dos Caldeirões. This adventure involves rappelling down waterfalls, jumping into pools, and exploring hidden canyons.













4. Thermal pools at Caldeira Velha.

These are a must-visit spot for anyone seeking relaxation and a touch of adventure in São Miguel Island. There are four thermal pools at Caldeira Velha, each with varying temperatures. The coolest pool, located at the highest point, features a cascading waterfall. Caldeira Velha is easily accessible by car.  There's also a Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre nearby












5. Hike Lagoa do Fogo.

The crater lake, formed by the collapse of the volcanic cone, is a lake surrounded by lush green vegetation and dramatic volcanic slopes, offering breathtaking panoramic views. You can reach Lagoa do Fogo by hiking or driving to the rim of the caldera. The hike is a moderately challenging one, but the views from the top are definitely worth the effort.














6. Relax in the Thermal Baths at Terra Nostra Park.  

Located in Furnas, Terra Nostra Park is a botanical wonderland known for its thermal baths and stunning gardens. The park's main attraction is the iconic iron-rich thermal pool, where the thermal waters are believed to have therapeutic properties for skin conditions and relaxation. You can also explore the walking paths where the park's gardens are meticulously landscaped, featuring ponds, bridges, and statues.














7. Have tea at the Gorreana Tea Plantation.

Gorreana, which was established in 1883, holds the distinction of being the oldest tea plantation in all of Europe that is still in operation today. Visitors are welcome to explore the tea plantation at their own pace and take in the stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and nearby villages. The estate features a charming tea shop where guests can purchase a variety of teas produced on-site.















8. Hike to Cascada do Salto do Prego Waterfall.

The trail to Salto do Prego is considered to be easy to moderate in difficulty. It's a looped trail that takes approximately 1 to 2.5 hours to complete. The highlight of the hike is the Salto do Prego Waterfall itself. The cascading waterfall plunges into a clear pool, where you can take a dip after your hike.














9. Swim in the ocean hot springs at Ponta da Ferraria.

Ponta da Ferraria is a charming coastal village located on the southwestern tip of São Miguel Island. It has a natural geothermal hot spring that flows directly into the ocean, creating a warm bathing experience right on the beach! The beach is a beautiful volcanic black sand beach, contrasted by the the turquoise waters.















10. Visit the Ananás de Santo António pineapple plantation.

This is a family-run pineapple plantation located in the parish of São Roque. Visitors can take a guided tour of the plantation and enjoy a Pineapple tastings of different pineapple products, such as jams, juices, and liqueurs.















11. Caving at Gruta do Algar do Carvão.

Caving at Gruta do Algar do Carvão is an unforgettable adventure. The cave resulted from volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago,  leaving behind a network of lava tubes,  chambers, and skylights. Exploring the cave is only possible with a guided tour led by experienced operators.













12. Relax in the hot springs at Poça da Dona Beija.

Poça da Dona Beija, located in Furnas is a popular destination for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. There are 5 thermal pools, heated by the volcanic activity in the region.   Lockers and changing rooms are available to store your belongings and change into your swimsuit. They can get busy, so consider visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon.














13. Day trip to Mosteiros.

 If you're looking to escape the crowds and enjoy a relaxing beach experience, Mosteiros is a great choice. It boasts a stunning black sand beach, and dotted along the Mosteiros coastline are natural pools formed by volcanic rock formations.  The calm waters make it a great choice to stand up paddle board. You can wander through the narrow streets of the town, admire the colorful houses, and experience the local way of life.














14. Hike the Salto do Cabrito Waterfall.

Salto do Cabrito is situated near the town of Ribeira Grande on the northern coast of São Miguel Island. This great loop trail combines a waterfall, a swimming hole, and rustic hot springs, all in a short and achievable hike. To follow the trail, climb the metal staircase up the hillside behind the Cabrito Hydroelectric Power Plant.












15. Day trip to Santa Maria island. Santa Maria, the closest archipelago island to Sao Miguel, is famous for its white sand beaches, which are a rarity in the Azores. Its a short 15 minute flight from Sao Miguel, and during the summer there are select ferries operating between the islands, which takes about 3 hours. Start your exploration with a visit to Vila do Porto, the main town of Santa Maria. Praia Formosa,  is the most famous beach, with clear turquoise waters, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or simply relaxing on the shore.
