the 9-to-5 nomad's guide to solo travel
know before you go.
transportation:
Turkey has an affordable network of domestic flights, for intercity travel. On the coast, rent a car. It's too beautiful not to have flexibility to stop & explore. The train network isn't extensive, but they have an efficient bus system.
CURRENCY:
(TURKISH LIRA) While most tourist areas accept cards, you'll want to keep some Lira on hand, especially for smaller purchases and taxis. You can just get cash when you arrive, at a bank issued ATM.
is it expensive?
The cost is considered Low to Moderate. During peak season, you can expect to spend $30- $250/night for accommodation, depending on travel style. September/Early October is my favorite time to visit.
Solo travel safety:
Solo Safety Rating: SAFE. Turkish people are renowned for their hospitality. Warm welcomes, helpfulness, and a genuine interest in tourists often surprise visitors.
language:
Local Language: Turkish. English is common in tourist areas, and spoken by the younger generation who are eager to practice!
travel tips
Expect genuine friendliness and curiosity to learn about you! Tipping is not mandatory but 10% is customary for good service. Bargaining is a way of life in Turkey, especially at bazaars and markets.
