transportation:
Flying is the best best way to travel between destinations, there are budget airlines with regular flights. Buses can be slow due to road conditions and frequent stops. If you get sea sick, just take a flight to Zanzibar vs Ferry.
CURRENCY:
(Tanzanian Shilling). CASH IS KING. You may find some restaurants and hotels take Credit Cards, but expect to primarily use Shilling. Just get cash at a bank ATM when you arrive.
is it expensive?
Tanzania price really varies - especially if you are planning a safari, which is expensive. If you are going to Zanzibar just for the beach, its considered Moderate. Peak season, expect to pay $70-$300+ depending on travel style.
Solo travel safety:
Solo Safety Rating: Exercise Caution. Its generally safe for solo travelers, but use common sense at night and walking alone. At the Ferry Terminal exiting the taxi, young men can be quite pushy wanting to carry luggage for tip.
language:
Local Language: Both English and Swahili. You will pick up on common greetings such as "Hakuna matata" (no worries) & Swahili phrases like "Jumbo" (Hello)

Due to poverty, expect to get hassled when walking the beach/town from Masaai selling tours & souvenirs. Dress modestly, especially outside of tourist areas. If you are prone to sea sickness, skip the ferry to Zanzibar - just fly.
