The long-distance buses are comfortable and affordable (such as ADO), for traveling between cities. Avoid using ride-sharing due to a violent clash with taxi drivers. Dont hail a cab, use the formal sitos (taxi stands) or have your hotel call one.
CURRENCY:
(PESO) Major credit and debit cards are accepted in most tourist areas, hotels & restaurants. However, you will want to keep SMALL bills of cash, especially for taxi's so you're not overcharged. Just hit up a bank ATM.
is it expensive?
The cost is considered Low to Moderate. During peak season, you can expect to spend $50- $300/night for accommodation, depending on travel style. May to October is the off season & the cheapest time to visit.
Solo travel safety:
Solo Safety Rating: EXERSICE CAUTION. Keep your valuables, including passports, money and credit cards secure and out of sight. Use ATMs located in secure areas, such as banks. Avoid displaying expensive jewelry. Do some research on fair prices for taxi.
language:
Local Language: Spanish. English is widely spoken in tourist area's. Using a few key basic phrases are appreciated such as Hello! = ¡Hola! (OH-lah) and Thank you = Gracias (GRA-see-as)
travel tips
Scammers may pose as police officers and ask fines for fabricated offenses. Always ask for ID and insist on that you will only pay fines at the nearest police station. ALWAYS agree on the price before getting in a taxi.
