transportation:
Car or Fugons: Renting a car is the best way to explore Albania. There is only a limited number of trains in operation. Consider using local mini busses (furgons) for travel between cities. Note: Bus schedules aren't super strict.
CURRENCY:
(LEK) Albania is still a cash-based society, especially in smaller towns. While credit cards are widely accepted, it's always a good idea to have some Lek on hand. Just get cash from a Bank ATM upon arrival.
is it expensive?
Albania is one of the most affordable countries to visit in Europe. During peak season (June - September), you can expect to spend $25- $150/night on accommodations.
Solo travel safety:
Solo Safety Rating: SAFE. Albanians are known for their willingness to help visitors, especially women. It's always wise to take common-sense precautions like keeping an eye on your belongings.
language:
Local Language: Albanian. The country is Moderately English speaking. They teach English in schools, so most young people will speak it. Tirana, Ksamil, and Dhermi tend to have more English speakers due to tourism.
travel tips
If you are going to beach towns like Ksamil & Dhermi, after mid-September the bars/restaurants start closing down for the season. Be prepared for the roads, infrastructure is improving, but some roads can be in poor condition.
